We offer what we call "Scandinavian-Style" knives. Actually that term has no strict definition, nor does the term "American-Style" knives. In our case, "Scandinavian-Style" simply means that our knives are made with materials and design commonly seen in knives of Scandinavian origin. The primary common feature of these knives is a handle of natural materials - usually a combination of wood and antler. As you can see from the photographs, another characteristic of our knives is an antler or horn bolster rather than a metal hilt.

The knives are made with the assumption that they will be used. High quality factory-made blades are selected for the majority of the knives. We feel that this approach represents the best tradeoff of price vs. performance for a working knife. For the outdoor knives we use blades that come from long established companies in Sweden, Norway and Finland. The kitchen knife blades come from a variety of sources in Europe, Asia and South America. There is a long tradition in Scandinavia of individuals making their own knives using blades made by professional metalsmiths. In rural Scandinavia, as in other rural cultures, there were often traveling blacksmiths that would visit a few times a year to make tools and other metal items such as hinges and latches that were needed around the farm. The farmer would then add his own handles to the tools, making them as simple or fancy as his time and skill allowed. We value our knives as a continuation of this tradition.

All knives with handles composed of natural materials possess a unique beauty and feel that cannot be duplicated by synthetics. The tradeoff for these attributes is that a bit more care is required. Natural materials have been formed into serviceable handles for knives since humans started making knives; however, you should not expect them to be as zero-maintenance and abuse-resistant as an engineered product. Each knife comes with an appropriate information sheet on the proper care of your knife - either "Care and Feeding of the Knives" or "Care and Feeding of Kitchen Knives".

Each knife is one-of-a kind. There are no standard models. The number associated with each knife is a unique production number, not a model number. When you order a knife, you will receive the same knife used for the photograph.
